La Organización de los Estados Americanos (OEA) defendió este domingo 8 de septiembre al fiscal jefe de la Corte Penal Internacional (CPI), Karim Khan, frente a las dudas surgidas en su investigación al presidente de Venezuela, Nicolás Maduro, por un posible conflicto de intereses por lazos familiares.
"Entendemos que no es admisible dudar de la honorabilidad de ninguna persona ni especular sobre los contenidos de la actuación que se ha tenido, sino sobre el análisis fundamentado de la misma", dijo el organismo panamericano en un comunicado.
The Washington Post publicó el pasado viernes 6 de septiembre que la abogada penal Venkateswari Alagendra, que se ha unido al equipo que defiende a Maduro ante la CPI, es cuñada de Khan.
El diario estadounidense precisó que en la CPI hay un código de conducta para la oficina del fiscal que ordena a sus miembros abstenerse de cualquier conflicto que pueda surgir de interés personal en el caso, "incluyendo una relación conyugal, parental u otra relación familiar cercana, personal o profesional con cualquiera de las partes".
La oficina de Khan destacó en un comunicado que "la composición del equipo legal que representa a Venezuela en los procedimientos en los que la Fiscalía defendió con éxito su derecho a hacer valer su jurisdicción en esta situación es un asunto de dominio público".
"Debemos presumir que el fiscal Karim Khan actúa bien y actuará bien y conforme a los estándares éticos que se le exigen y que su cargo amerita", apuntó la OEA en su comunicado.
